Our students in Year 1 and Year 2 are provided with a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum that is carefully planned to meet the needs of individuals. English, Maths, Science and ICT have a very high profile as core subjects of the National Curriculum. The foundation subjects are mostly taught within our Montessori lessons but are in line with the updated National Curriculum 2014. Our approach is based on enquiry learning; finding out the answer to a big question. The student voice is central to this approach as the children pose questions about what they want to explore in relation to the enquiry. These questions determine the direction of the investigation and ensure that students are fully engaged in the learning journey.
Year 1 phonics screening check
At the end of Year 1, children will undertake a statutory phonics screening check. This is a short assessment to make sure that children have learnt phonics to an appropriate standard.
There are 40 words in the screening check which children are asked to read on a one-to-one basis with their teacher. The check is made up of 'real words' (eg. 'mud') and 'non-words' (eg. 'splog') and children need to apply their phonic knowledge to read all words.
Preparation for the check takes place during the daily phonics session, but you can help your child at home by practising phonics on a regular basis. If you would like more information on the phonics screening check for Year 1 children, please click here
